Throughout its history, Horizon went through several stages and business models. The Company began in 1998 as a "build-transfer" developer known as Zilkha Renewable Energy, followed by a period of ownership by Goldman Sachs as a "developer-owner-operator" beginning in 2005. Following its acquisition on July 2, 2007 by EDP, the Company became an integrated strategic renewable energy company. Horizon is ranked third in the U.S. in wind energy in terms of net installed capacity.
The U.S. wind industry had a total installed capacity of 31,109 MW as of June 2009. According to the American Wind Energy Association, wind energy will generate over 60 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2009, enough to power over 5.5 million American homes.
